MP3

I know a lot of people now download music and talk about playing their MP3’s.  Can you tell me a little bit about what this means?

MP3 is special format that compresses (reduces the file size) of digital audio.  This format works especially well for digitally recorded music but is applicable for any type of digital audio.  Music is often times harder than speech to compress because of its complexity.  Say you originally record a song and it takes up x amount of space on your hard drive.  Using MP3 to compress the file will mean it may then only take up 10% of the original space.  The smaller the file of course the more songs you can hold on your disk drive.  The small size also makes them easier to email or download.  MP3 is a lossy compression type meaning that during the compression of data some of the original data is lost and not used when the file is uncompressed during playback.  Since people’s hearing is not perfect however this missing data usually goes undetected by the most people.  The MP3 format is used for many types of audio players including the portable ones and those used on a laptop or desktop PC.  A computer will utilize a program that can be associated with the Operating System to actually play the MP3 file.  If you have any questions on sound or players, give iNeedTech.com a call.
