SERP (2 of 4 in series)

March 22, 2008 – 12:06 pm

I hear the web guys in my office talking about 4 acronyms, SEM, SERP, SEO, PPC.  Can you provide some insight into what these are and what they mean?

This is number 2 in the 4 part series.  Let’s next take SERP which is short for Search Engine Response Page.  This term refers to the web pages you get back after you submit a search request to one of the search engines like Google, Yahoo, and MSN etc.  Each time you search, the search engine through its involved and proprietary algorithm (mathematical formula), decides which results to return to your computer screen.  They base the return pages on their experience with the search term you entered.  This search term or a portion of it is often called a keyword in the industry.  As an example you may search for a broad keyword of “printer” or you could be more specific in searching for “HP printer“.  These two different search entries may give you a different set of results.  Some entries on your SERP may be the same, some may be different because they may be tailored to your keyword.   The reason different search engines return different results for the same keyword is due to the makeup of their individual algorithm.  I will continue the series in the next few posts but if you have more questions go ahead and give the guys and gals at iNeedTech.com team a call.
